September was an excellent Month
Hullo everybody,
September was an excellent month for us. We have had a lot of feedback through our website and have spent many hours responding to feedback or training issues. Please keep corresponding.
The highlight of the month was the New Zealand Water and Wastes Association Conference in Rotorua over the 18-21 September. We had a prime exhibition space and enjoyed the contact with existing and, I hope, future clients.
 Jacqui Roberts of NZWETA, and Peter Keller of Opus about to demonstrate his throwing ability.Thanks to everyone that came up and spent some time, and earned a T-Shirt by throwing our stress balls at the target. The lolly jar and stress balls were also popular with many delegates taking these home as gifts for their children (well, that was their story).
There were many stories that should be left on tour. However, a highlight was the Operations Stream at the Conference and the Operators dinner on the Wednesday night. It should be noted that while the behaviour of all guests were impeccable, the last to leave were three Excell Corporation Water and Drainage employees. A small prize to the first respondent who can name all three.
I am sure that the next NZWWA Journal will feature all the stories from the conference.
From the files of dumb and dumber
 Jonathan checking his vehicle is safe on the tow truckGuess who misplaced their car keys while shopping for the sweets for the exhibition stand? Yes, yours truly. When visiting Rotorua all you can do is get the car back to the hotel and send to Wellington for the spare set of keys. The spare set arrived next day followed by the store calling to say they had found the missing keys. Pictures of the occasion were taken by a colleague – no photo credit given here. I can also say that AA Roadside and the Rotorua towie were truly magnificent people.
Yikes, a colleague just advised it is 10 weeks to Christmas. Just enough time to finish our training commitments for 2007.

Advanced Stormwater Management and Design Course
NZWETA is pleased that it providing a course that is right up there in professional level training for Stormwater Engineers.
The course is specifically aimed at local and regional authority engineers, and consulting engineers interested in stormwater management, that would like to learn more about why there is a need to manage stormwater, what the effects of stormwater are, what tools are available, and the basic design principles of these tools.
Presenters
Presenters are Earl Shaver and Susan Ira. Earl has a long association with Stormwater Management including 10 years with Auckland Regional Council as a technical specialist in stormwater management, and has written numerous design guidelines for stormwater infrastructure and management.
Susan Ira is a specialist in integrated catchment management planning and consents advice and compliance. She is responsible for the development of a "Whole of Life Costing Model" for rain gardens and stormwater ponds
Content
- Understanding of stormwater management and why it’s important to manage stormwater;
- Introduction to the different types of structure devices that are available to manage stormwater;
- Discussion of performance data. How some practices are more effective on metals, toxics, sediments and nutrients;
- Discussion on costs of stormwater management; and
- Design, construction and maintenance requirements relating to different practices.

Trenchless pipe installation
By Chris Breen and Eric Thorn of Opus International Consultants, and the National Certificate of Water Reticulation qualification.
In recent years there have been large advances in trenchless technology for installing new pipelines and more can be expected in the next few years. In addition to tunnelling, there are four other methods of trenchless technology used for new pipelines in New Zealand. These are:
- Horizontal boring
- Directional Drilling
- Pipe Jacking
- Micro Tunnelling
The limits and advantages of each of the technologies are discussed below. This is intended as a general guideline only as rapid advances are being made and some equipment and some contractors may be able to obtain more distance or better accuracy. More...
Purpose and Nature of Wastewater Collection and Treatment Systems
In essence the purpose of a wastewater collection/treatment system is to protect our environment and public health by ensuring that the wastewater is collected and treated to a specified level prior to discharge back to the environment.
A wastewater collection system or sewerage system is a network of pipes connected together which allow human and industrial wastewaters to flow, underground, from individual properties through to a central collection point where the wastewater is normally treated at a wastewater treatment plant and then discharged.

Condition Assessment FAQ
Many people talk about Condition Assessment, but there is little agreement on what it actually means. This article is intended to answer some common questions and give you some ideas of how to get better information about your system.

Concrete Pipe Installers Course
John Black has been delivering the Concrete Pipe Installers course this month with courses held in Auckland , Hamilton , Tauranga, Rotorua, Gisborne and Nelson. Part of the presentation is a rig in a crate to demonstrate how to join pipes using the rolling rings. The crate is pretty heavy and we have to hire certain vehicles that have enough load space.
Our trainer John Black sent these photos to illustrate the two vehicle choices we have used so far. It is obvious that he has a preference for the Ford Territory. What would be your choice?
Space required for transporting the DN 300 concrete pipe joint in its crate
 Ford Territory with the wooden crate in place - miles of room.
 Toyota Hi-Ace “cargo van” Could probably hold 8 similar crates! We will be taking the Concrete Pipe course to the new locations of Wanganui (7 Nov) and the Hawkes Bay (6 Nov). Enrol online on the website.
