Unit Standards based training for Polyethylene pipe welding
Buttwelding (Day 1) and Electrofusion Welding (Day 2)

Water New Zealand have endorsed this training course for water industry PE pipe welders.

The courses recognise the importance of good installation practices and site work in achieving a successful and durable pipeline installation. As well as promoting understanding of practical on-site checking of joints the courses require trainees to provide evidence of welds and joints made on site as part of the evidence of competence.

This means engineers, contractors and clients can have confidence that competency now includes demonstrated practical experience under real site conditions as well as knowledge of theoretical factors.

Trainees who complete all of the course requirements successfully will be issued a certificate that can be used to demonstrate competence in welding and jointing.  This course will also be assessed against the PE Welding unit standards.

Qualification

The areas of competence covered by the training are summarised below:
  • Prepare for, and carry out, jointing of polyethylene pipes up to 250mm diameter by butt fusion welding
  • Prepare for, and carry out, jointing of polyethylene pipes greater than 280mm diameter by butt fusion welding
  • Prepare for, and carry out, jointing of polyethylene pipes up to 250mm diameter, and fittings, electrofusion
  • Prepare for, and carry out, jointing of polyethylene pipes greater than 280mm diameter, and fittings, by electrofusion
  • Install compression fittings, flanges, and backing ring
  • Describe polyethylene welding, mechanical joints, repairs to pipelines, and tapping systems
New Zealand Water & Environment Training Academy (NZWETA) will be delivering training courses with the support of Water New Zealand and Water Industry Training Organisation.

The courses are presented by experienced PE welders working for established and recognised welding companies. The presenters not only have a good knowledge of training delivery and the course material but also complete thousands of welds every year on pipe materials and fittings over a wide range of sizes and specifications and under all kinds of site conditions.

Training material was prepared by Dr Jonathan Morris an experienced materials specialist who for five years managed a substantial UK water industry plastic pipe materials technical support programme.

Jonathan was also involved in the development and testing of PE welding specifications including the revision of WIS 4‑32 08 to incorporate dual pressure welding in the early 1990s. Jonathan has helped prepare numerous PE and pipe related specifications and a number of industry manuals.
