Swimming Pools – Marvellous Places
Article written by Sarah Cresswell. Sarah is a trainer for Pool Water Treatment courses for Opus Environmental Training Centre.
Swimming Pools are such marvellous places, expanses of water where kids splash and swim - a real asset to a school and community. However, these facilities require proper maintenance and skilled operation so the water remains sparkly blue, and up to standard – namely “NZS 5826:2000 Pool Water Quality”. Keeping the pool in an acceptable state, with good water quality and preventing it from becoming overloaded takes a mixture of training and experience.
Incorrect operation and management can cause big problems. Opus believes pool operation has three basic factors for correct pool control - Disinfection, Design, and Duties which all work together to control the water quality and keep a pool disease-free. Remember that trouble can come in all shapes and sizes, and often does.
Over the last few years, Opus Environmental Training Centre staff has taught swimming pool operation to over 2200 individuals, many of whom were from schools. Many schools have committed to providing safe pool water for their children by having suitably trained operators’ onsite. These courses, which cover pool water quality and safe use of chemicals, are delivered throughout the country for convenience and to keep costs down.
As well as our popular one-day course covering unit standard 20046, we provide a variety of other NZQA accredited courses for the aquatics industry. These courses are available in two-day modules or by distance learning. The modules can be completed one at a time, over a period of several months. Students will also complete a workbook which allows them to apply their new skills while at work.
In addition to gaining valuable knowledge about pool operation and water quality, the aquatics industry has a variety of career paths which include the unit standards that we deliver. Whether it is a life guard, pool attendant or aquatics facility manager, training can empower individuals to provide a useful community service.
