Confined Space Entry

This one-day course is aimed at people who are required to enter confined spaces or observe confined space entry. It is also worthwhile for those that work on water, wastewater or stormwater reticulation systems, which collectively make up water reticulation services.

NZWETA is offering this popular course providing training and education for people who work in, or observe confined space environments. Participants are also given the opportunity to achieve National Qualification Framework (NQF) unit standards by way of practical assessment and verification of competency.

This course has been designed for new participants in the industry, or simply as a refresher, which we recommend should be completed every two years.

Content

Confined spaces and their permit notification and implementation requirements;

Identification and control measures to eliminate, isolate and minimise the risk of hazards;

Monitoring and confined space testing requirements;

Responsibilities and duties of people entering confined spaces or conducting observation duties for confined spaces;

Identification of the location, and work procedure to be carried out;

Examination of an entry plan for its completeness; and

Entrance, completion of work and withdrawal from a confined space.

The trainer provides an extensive range of safety equipment however, due to the practical exercise, participants must bring along their own personal protective equipment such as hard hat, overalls and boots.

Chemical Handling

A one-day course designed to inform and assess the knowledge and understanding of personnel who are required to be certified as "approved handlers".

All course participants assessed as competent gain unit standard 20645: Describe the requirements of the HSNO Act 1996, (relevant to approved handlers).

Designed to inform and assess the knowledge and understanding of personnel who are required to be certified as “approved handlers”.

The course has been designed to provide training in areas outlined in the general requirements for Approved Handlers by ERMA NZ. It draws on the skills of Orica Chemnet and the Environmental Training Centre (Opus International Consultants Ltd) to provide comprehensive resource material that will assist with employers’ ongoing chemical handling and hazard management issues.

It provides:

An understanding of relevant NZ legislation, regulations and Codes of Practice – with emphasis on the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act (1996) and its attendant regulations

An understanding of risk management and emergency response requirements

A level of general workplace health and safety knowledge and the application of workplace health and safety skills pertaining to chemical hazards

The training is completed in a basic one-day course – with an additional half-day module available to address specific additional chemicals that are not covered in the one-day course. Satisfactory completion of written assessments, coupled with submission of workplace procedures, provides for formal verification of knowledge and competency to Unit Standard 20645.

The course can be offered in regional locations or for specific workplaces. All people who are required to have knowledge in chemical handling will find this course useful.

There are no pre-requisites for this course – but an interest in, or prior experience with, the storage and handling of hazardous chemicals is desirable.

Flexible Course structure

The training course is offered as a series of modules to provide general and specific information on the hazardous substances for which application has been made to become an approved handler.
