This National Certificate is designed for people seeking to increase their knowledge and skills in water treatment. It is especially suitable if you are supervising water treatment plants that serve populations of 500 to 5,000, or working under supervision on larger water treatment systems. 

It covers specialist water treatment skills that include:

National Diploma in Drinking Water - Water Treatment (Site Technician)

This is the highest level qualification for people working in, or progressing towards, a supervisory or management role in water treatment - either for local Government or industrial water suupply systems. It is ideal for people who are experienced in supervising or managing water treatment systems.

The Diploma

With changing drinking water standards, new legislation and a competitive business environment, qualified water treatment Managers and Supervisors are in high demand. If you are currently in, or progressing towards, a supervisory or management role in water treatment, this qualification is for you.

The Diploma has two strands:

Treatment strand: for ‘hands on’ water treatment plant Supervisors and Managers who wish to increase their knowledge and learn best practice procedures in water treatment (covered in this brochure).

National Diploma in Drinking Water - Drinking Water Assessment

This high-level course is designed for public health employees, enabling them to implement Ministry of Health drinking water policies, legislation and standards. It is essential for anyone working as a drinking water assessor, and also ideal for consulting and council engineers wanting more detailed and specific water treatment knowledge than is available in most engineering courses.

Understanding New Zealand's drinking water legislation

This is a one day course that will enable participants to understand recent changes to New Zealand’s drinking-water framework, legislation and key regulatory agencies.

It will provide clarity to water supplier’s responsibilities, timeframes and duties in key areas such as Public Health Risk Management Plans, Drinking Water Standards Water Supply Gradings and the Health (Drinking Water) Amendment Act.

It will identify opportunities for funding improvements to infrastructure, and highlight contentious issues including the meaning and application of ‘all practicable steps’ and ‘affordability’ in the Act.

DWAA 2007 Legislation Overview:

The roles and duties of water suppliers and regulators and how it links to the drinking water National Environmental Standard and Building Act.

PHRMPs:


What are they, why we have them, how can they add value, what is a DWA looking for and the process for approval and implementation?

Grading:

What it is, what it is not. The Drinking Water Assessor’s process and how to make grading simple and problem free.

Less known or clear parts of the Act:


The things they never told you and the implications for water suppliers.

Principles and Trends of Water Treatment

The Principles and Trends of Water Treatment course has been developed for those working in the water treatment field and covers the fundamentals of water treatment sciences and processes.

This course has been delivered for more than 10 years and has been a useful development process for engineers, operators and those new to water treatment processes.

This three day course is being held in Hamilton.

Content

1. Water use and characteristics

2. Health Act and DWSNZ

3. Public Health Risk Management plans and sanitary surveys

4. Processes:

pre treatment; coagulation and flocculation; separation; filtration; disinfection; waste management; PH correction; plumbosolvency;  impact of reticulation systems and taste & odour and flouridation.

5. Small water systems and bottled water (Food Act).

Compliance/consent officers, engineers, operators, contract managers and administrators, environmental and health protection officers, customer service people, asset managers, Asset data personnel, wet industry infrastructure managers, defence personnel and suppliers who require an excellent introduction to the principles of Water Treatment.

Water and Environmental Sampling

Correct sampling practices are essential to many businesses. NZWETA has developed a Sampling course to teach the principles and practices behind taking and transporting representative samples for testing.

This is not to question laboratory activities but to highlight the inadequacies with sampling and sample collection in the water quality and environmental industry before the samples actually get to the laboratory.

The Sampling course introduces water quality, environmental, and wastewater compliance monitoring with an option to achieve NZQA unit standards. The course includes practical assessment and verification of competency.

Course content covers:

Introduction to the importance of sampling

Requirements of the Drinking Water Standards for NewZealand

Introduction to characteristics of environmental and wastewaters

Practical, on-site testing will be demonstrated and discussed

Sampling practices to avoid contamination

Who should attend?

The course is aimed at laboratory technicians, council and private personnel involved in sampling, permitting, monitoring and compliance activities, water and wastewater operations, health protection officials and water transportation.

Course delivery

We offer a unique delivery for this course. The morning is dedicated to the theory of various sampling techniques and requirements. The afternoon includes a practical component for assessment and accreditation of unit standard 17890: Undertake sampling and testing procedures for water treatment and 24927: Describe, and undertake sampling and testing procedures for wastewater. Students are also expected to complete some work by distance.
