Irrigation Courses
Qualifications
National Certificate in Irrigation Design
Content
The course is to be delivered in the five areas outlined in the Irrigation Design Code of Practice: planning; design; quoting and supply; installation and commissioning, and operation and maintenance.
Module One (5 days duration):
Planning:
Contact by Client, property visit and preparation of a design brief.
Design:
Water sources, soil/crop/plant relationships, application rates, uniformity concepts, irrigationsystem selection, sprinkler/emitter selection and hydraulic design.
Module Two (3 days duration):
Design:
Pumps and motors, basic electricity, specialty valves, filtration, backflow prevention, control and measurement and monitoring of irrigation systems.
Quotation & Acceptance.
Awareness of best installation practice.
Module Three (3 days duration):
Installation and commissioning and operation and maintenance manuals.
Who should attend?
Irrigation designers involved in the design of irrigation systems in broad acre crops, horticulture, turf and landscape should attend this course.
This NZQA registered programme will enable designers to attend irrigation design courses and formally recognise those that meet the unit standards with the industry-recognised title “Certified Irrigation Designer”.
The training programme will help irrigation designers to comply with the Irrigation Design Code of Practice by providing them with the understanding and tools required to achieve the required standards.
Delivery
Opus Environmental Training Centre will deliver the qualification requirements in three mixed theory and practical based modules.
Module 1 is delivered in five days, while Module 2 and Module 3 are both delivered in three days each (11 days in total).
The irrigation design practical unit standard, ‘Plan, design and prepare a design report and drawings for irrigation systems’ will run throughout the duration of the course with candidates required to submit for assessment three irrigation designs to design report stage including quote a bill of materials.
The designs will be a drip/micro system design, a fixed sprinkler design and a travelling sprinkler system design.
Case studies will be substituted where the candidates cannot provide irrigation designs of actual systems.

National Certificate in Irrigation Design (Accelerated Program)
People who have completed this qualification will be recognised as having the skills to plan and design fixed, movable and micro-irrigation systems; develop operations and maintenance manuals for these systems; and calculate key performance indicators (KPIs).
These people will also have knowledge of irrigation systems, their components and performance; irrigation efficiency statistics; water, and application rates; water metering, soil moisture devices and their selection for measuring performance; system installation and commissioning requirements; pumps and motors, and their selection; hydraulic grade line, surge implications, performance, and speciality valves; and control systems, pump starters and electricity.
Who should attend?
Experienced irrigation designers involved in the design of irrigation systems in agriculture broad acre crops, horticulture, turf and landscape should attend this course. This NZQA registered programme will enable designers who achieve the unit standards to be formally recognised with the title “Certified Irrigation Designer”.
Delivery
The qualification is offered through attendance at an initial 2-day course which will cover the qualification requirements and review of the Irrigation Design Code of Practice. Core subject material such as crop and soil factors (water holding capacity – deficit irrigation), and hydraulics will also be covered.
Participants will be required to complete course work within prescribed times and submit written assignments culminating with the unit standard, ‘Plan, design and prepare a design report and drawings for irrigation systems’ with candidates required to submit for assessment three irrigation designs to design report stage including operating and maintenance manuals. The designs will be a drip/micro system design, a fixed sprinkler design and a travelling sprinkler system design. Case studies will be substituted where the candidates cannot provide irrigation designs of actual systems.

Water Measurement Full-pipe Installation & Verification Training
The Irrigation NZ “Blue Tick” accreditation programme for water measurement requires Service Providers to have a good appreciation of the capabilities and work involved in the installation and verification of their products. “Blue tick” status is partly dependent on the following criteria being achieved by service providers.
Installation - (Offered Now)
For all Accredited Installation Service Providers , the installation must be supervised onsite by –
Full-pipe - a person that holds the NZQA unit standard -Select, install, and commission a water meter for full pipe water abstraction
Note: All accredited service providers must agree to undertake the training retrospectively - within 12 months of it being available (July 2011).
You can enrol at anytime as this course is offered by distance learning.
We are taking enrolments for this course now. Material will be sent out on receipt of payment.

Verification - (offered Now)
For all Accredited Verification Service Provider, the verification must be undertaken by –
Full-pipe - a person that holds the NZQA unit standard -Select, perform, and report on a full pipe water measurement system verification
Note: All accredited service providers must agree to undertake the training retrospectively - within 12 months of it being available (TBC). For more information on this course click here
