Chemical Handling (Incorporating Unit Standard 20645)
Designed to inform and assess the knowledge and understanding of personnel who are required to be certified as “approved handlers”.
The course has been designed to provide training in areas outlined in the general requirements for Approved Handlers by ERMA NZ. It draws on the skills of Orica Chemnet and the Environmental Training Centre (Opus International Consultants Ltd) to provide comprehensive resource material that will assist with employers’ ongoing chemical handling and hazard management issues.
It provides:
- An understanding of relevant NZ legislation, regulations and Codes of Practice – with emphasis on the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act (1996) and its attendant regulations
- An understanding of risk management and emergency response requirements
- A level of general workplace health and safety knowledge and the application of workplace health and safety skills pertaining to chemical hazards
The training is completed in a basic one-day course – with an additional half-day module available to address specific additional chemicals that are not covered in the one-day course. Satisfactory completion of written assessments, coupled with submission of workplace procedures, provides for formal verification of knowledge and competency to Unit Standard 20645.
The course can be offered in regional locations or for specific workplaces. All people who are required to have knowledge in chemical handling will find this course useful.
There are no pre-requisites for this course – but an interest in, or prior experience with, the storage and handling of hazardous chemicals is desirable.
Flexible Course structure
The training course is offered as a series of modules to provide general and specific information on the hazardous substances for which application has been made to become an approved handler.
